i think this is coming up under scott and mccall. i'm still new at this blogging thing. SAD!
"The idle mind is the Devil's workshop." Or so it seems with Laman and Lemuel. Those poor young men. Every time they find time on their hands they get into trouble. they stop to camp, hunt for food and gang up on Nephi when he breaks his bow. They travel again, Ishmael dies and this time the wives of Laman and Lemuel get the boys going. This time it's so bad that they decide the only way to solve the problem is by murdering Lehi and Nephi. They're off again traveling and when they stop they begin the complaining again - this time about building a ship. Things settle down; the ship is finished and off they go to the promised land with time on their hands. The complaints begin again. Nephi's words to Laman and Lemuel sum it all for me "... ye are quick to do iniquity and slow to remember the Lord your God...my soul is rent with anquish because of you, and my heart is pained..." No matter what the situation, we should be anxiously engaged in a good cause. i feel like after having read these chapters i want to fill the hours of each day with good things. - alecia
So I have many questions and I would like any help with answers if you have them. Some of the questions might not pertain to our salvation but are interesting to me. :-) The Liahona had two pointers, one pointed the way they should go, does any one know what the other did? Why do you think the Lord gave them the Liahona? He could have just as easily told Lehi or Nephi which direction to go? And last, Why did thy were they in the wilderness for 8 years? It does not take that long to walk from Jerusalem to the ocean. Maybe weeks/months but 8 years? What were they doing, learning, or even going? See, not really about salvation but I think on the interesting side.
i am constantly impressed by the courage and strength that nephi has. it seems that quite often he is the only one pushing forward. even his very own father was found questioning the Lords direction at one point.
i try to imagine myself in his position... would i be able to stay as strong as he? especially if our father began to doubt?
i also think about when they arrived at the land Bountiful. it sounds so beautiful and full of all their needs. BUT then the Lord tells Nephi to build a ship and go to the Promised Land. wow! that would be hard to do.
